Cornelia and the Capacious Handbag

Bang! Rattle.. Thump! Tinkle...

DADDY: "Goodness! What or earth is all that noise?"

CORNELIA: "Oh, it's only me, Daddy! I'm back from shopping with my best friend Moesje and Mummy Marian in Groningen."

DADDY: "Oh I'm glad you are home safely, Cornelia. Did you enjoy yourself?"

CORNELIA: "Oh of course I did, Daddy! I always have fun with Moesje! She is my best friend after all, and we have so much in common."

DADDY: "Well, that's good, Cornelia. My! You have shopped up a storm, haven't you?"

CORNELIA: "Oh yes, Daddy! Moesje and I had a wonderful time!"

DADDY: "So what have you brought home, Cornelia?"

CORNELIA: "Well Moesje wanted some lace to make a new frock, so I bought some lace too, and some pretty ribbon as well. And we went and played with makeup. We had our claws painted with nail varnish and tried on lipsticks to match our plush fur on our muzzles. I like this shade of pink. I also bought some nice pink toned face powder. And then Cornelia and Mummy Marian took me to tea at the Cappuvino restaurant and they treated me to lemonade and some delicious little cakes! Then as we were leaving I remembered that Bruno (saltwood67) told me not to forget the chocolate, so I bought some! Now I am home!"

DADDY: "My, that does sound like a busy day. I hope you thanked Mummy Marian for buying you all those lovely treats and thanked both her and Moesje for taking you to tea at Cappuvino."

CORNELIA: "Oh I did, Daddy! What kind of bear do you take me for? I am very well mannered and polite! I didn't grow up in a cave!"

DADDY: "No, of course not, Cornelia! I was just checking." *Looks at lace, lipstick, ribbon, powder and chocolate bar.* "One thing puzzles me though."

CORNELIA: "And what is that, Daddy?"

DADDY: "Well, how did you manage to get all those items into my antique reticule from the 1890s, Cornelia?"

CORNELIA: "Oh! Well, your very old handbag that you call something else is very capacious, Daddy! Now, would you like some chocolate?"

My bear Cornelia has made friends with a little bear named Moesje www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577217879.... Moesje is a beautiful Bukowski Bear from Paal in Belgium. She has come to live with Mummy Marian (Marian Kloon (on and off)).She had been waiting in the dark corner of a shop with other bears for a long time, hoping someone would pick her up. All the bears were picked up, except Moesje. An appeal was made on the Internet and Mummy Marian sprang into action immediately! Moesje needs friends to love her, and Cornelia did not hesitate, for she has so much love to give to Moesje. Now Moesje's days are full of happiness. You can see Moesje waiting for Cornelia to go shopping with here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/53698250463/in/photost... or in the first comment below.

Cornelia is holding a more recent acquisition of mine. I love and collect vintage and antique accessories, including handbags and their predecessor, reticules. This is an antique reticule from the 1890s made of what must one have been powder blue silk, now faded to a buff colour, with velvet detailing decorated with hand embroidered flowers. It has a brass clasp and and chain, and it has a wonderful tassel made of old bugle beads cascading down its front. The clasp is still very tight. Inside it is lined with more black velvet.

The lace is a beautiful Victorian lace collar that was handmade in France. The ribbon I acquired from an interior design shop a few months ago. The tube of lipstick is a Coral Colours shade of Raisin. The powder box is a "Mascarade" one made by L.T. Piver in Paris in the 1930s, and the unknown manufacturer chocolate wrapper is from the early 1900s.

Cornelia, I found in an antique and vintage market quite recently. She is a vintage edition Russ Bear from their Mohair Collection. She is made of deliberately mottled mohair to give her that vintage look. One of a limited edition of 10,000, she was designed by artist Carol Hosfstad and is completely handmade.
