Paddington and Scout in a Sandal Carriage
PADDY: “Look everybear! It’s a lovely, sunny day today. Shall we go and play hide-and-seek in the garden?”
BOGART: “Oh I would love that, Paddy!” *Excited.*
DAISY-MAUD: “May I come and play too, Paddy?”
JAGO: “And me?”
PADDY: “Of course, Daisy-Maud and Jago.”
BOGART: “But Paddy!” *Tugs on mackintosh.* “Paddy, no game of hide-and-seek is complete without Scout.”
PADDY: “That’s true, but where is Scout?”
*Huffs and puffs are heard.*
DAISY-MAUD: “What is that noise?”
*Huffs and puffs continue.*
JAGO: “They sound like little bear huffs and puffs.”
*Huffs and puffs get louder.*
DAISY-MAUD: “Look! It’s Algie!”
ALGIE: *Huffs and puffs as he pushes Scout across the floor in a rather glamorous Italian sandal.*
BOGART: “And Scout!”
SCOUT: “Halt!” *Raises paw.*
ALGIE: *Stops pushing Scout in the sandal.*
SCOUT: “Thank you Algie. You can rest for a little while now.”
ALGIE: *Huffs and puffs.* “Tha… thank… thank you… Scout.”
PADDY: “Goodness Scout! What on earth are you doing, sitting in that sandal?”
SCOUT: “Ahem!” *Clears throat.* “I’ll have you know that this is not a sandal, Paddy.”
PADDY: “Yes it is Scout!”
DAISY-MAUD: “It certainly looks like a sandal to me, Scout.”
JAGO: “Me too, Scout.”
SCOUT: “Well it isn’t, Paddy, Daisy-Maud and Jago.”
BOGART: “What is it then, Scout, if not a sandal?”
SCOUT: “This is my new sandal carriage.”
PADDY, JAGO, DAISY-MAUD and BOGART: “Sandal carriage, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Yes! It’s the only way to travel. You should try it.”
DAISY-MAUD: “Well that might be fine for you, Scout, but poor Algie has to push you along! Poor Algie.” *Puts paw on Algie’s shoulder.* “Are you alright, Algie? You were huffing and puffing a lot.”
ALGIE: “Oh yes, Daisy-Maud. Thank you!” *Nods head enthusiastically.* “I’m only huffing and puffing because Scout likes it.”
SCOUT: “It reminds me of the choo-choo of a train.” *Nods enthusiastically.*
ALGIE: “It makes Scout feel special. Scout is really very light, and this shoe is easy to slide across the floor.”
DAISY-MAUD: “So you aren’t out of breath then, Algie?”
ALGIE: “No, Daisy-Maud. But thank you.”
DAISY-MAUD: “That’s alright then.”
SCOUT: “Right! Are you ready Algie?”
ALGIE: “Yes Scout!”
SCOUT: “Let’s go then! We’ll see you outside for hide-and-seek, Paddy, Bogart, Daisy-Maud and Jago.”
ALGIE: *Huffs and puffs as he pushes Scout in the sandal.*
PADDY, BOGART, DAISY-MAUD and JAGO: *Watch them go.*
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
Daisy-Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her Daddy.
