Paddington Plays Scoutpunzel’s Witch
PADDY: “Well Scout, I’m glad you learned your lesson from last week and this this time built a tower or toilet rolls that is only one storey high,”
SCOUT: “Ahem!” *Clears throat.* “Since I’m wearing my Rapunzel wig made for me by Daddy out of curling ribbon,” *Preens.* “You may address me as Scoutpunzel, Paddy.”
PADDY: “Well Scoutpunzel, I’m glad to find us both with our paws firmly on the ground.”
SCOUT: “Well, I am too, Paddy. I can’t get stuck, or fall any further than the floor.” *Nods enthusiastically.*
PADDY: “However, I am less enthused by having to wear this patterned headscarf and knitted yellow shawl, Scoutpunzel. Why do I have to wear them?”
SCOUT: “Well, somebear has to play the ugly old witch, Paddy. And as you are ancient…”
PADDY: “Scout! Err… I mean, Scoutpunzel! What have I told you about talking about bears’ ages, especially mine?”
SCOUT: “But Paddy, you are ancient, coming from a time when the world was black and white! It suits you better than me to play the old witch. I on the other hand suit the part of Scoutpunzel perfectly because I am young and beautiful!” *Preens.*
PADDY: “I keep telling you Scout… err, Scoutpunzel, it was only the telly that was in black and white, not the whole world! Anyway, I feel like a 1940s housewife with this scarf wrapped around my head.”
SCOUT: “Well, be that as it may, Paddy, the story says that we need a witch to keep me locked up in this tower against my will, so that has to be you, since I am the young and beautiful Scoutpunzel with my golden tresses.” *Preens.* “Otherwise there is no need for a handsome and brave, tenacious bear prince to come and rescue me.”
PADDY: “Oh!”
SCOUT: “Now, all I need is a handsome and brave, tenacious bear prince to come and save me, like mijn beste vriend Prins Peter (Marian Kloon (on and off)) or Sir Spencer de Sant Galdric (FinouCat)! Come and save me from the mean old witch, Mother Paddy, Prins Peter and Sir Spencer de Sant Galdric! Let’s play knights and damsels in distress!”
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
