Shy of the Sun

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 26th of August is “sun protection”. In the last two years, I have been exploring a new avenue in my photographic creativity, that of portraiture photography. I used a somewhat illusive sitter for several “Smile on Saturday” themes in the past. My model has kindly returned to sit for me yet again for this theme. My sitter has very pale, English skin, which burns in the harsh sunshine, goes red, peels, and goes back to white again. So, he is shy of the sun, which makes him the perfect choice of this week’s theme as he wears sunhats, sunglasses and has even been known to sit beneath a sunshade or parasol when the sun is too strong. He is a firm believer in sun protection. He tells me that one warm summer’s day he carelessly forgot to take his wide brimmed Panama with him to work, and when he went out for a half hour at luncheon, because he was caught in the heat of the day, he returned to his office very red! Now that is sensitive skin! No wonder he is shy of the sun.

My model sports his own John Varvatos sunglasses and Luton Hats Panama which he tells me he has worn for well over twenty years. He holds one of my antique parasols from the 1920s which features a suitably beach like chequered pattern. Made by S. Fox and Company, it is an exuberant example of roaring 20s fun! I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile.
