Paddington, Scout, Algie and Some Monkey Business
DADDY: “Paddy, I think it’s time to stop our walk now, go home and have a cup of tea and some cake. What do you think?”
PADDY: “Oh yes Daddy! That sounds like an excellent idea! All this walking is giving me a grumbly tummy!”
DADDY: “Thinking of grumbly tummies… do you know where Scout and Algie are?”
PADDY: “They were just behind us, Daddy, but they might have stopped to smell some flowers or play hide-and-seek. Would you like me to go and fetch them, Daddy?”
DADDY: “Oh if you would, that would be most helpful. Thank you Paddy!”
PADDY: “Scout! Algie! Where are you? Where are you?” *Looks around but doesn’t see either bear.* “Scout! Algie! It’s time to go home! Daddy is going to make tea and serve cake!”
SCOUT: “Boo Paddy!”
ALGIE: “We are up here, Paddy!” *Giggles.*
PADDY: “Goodness Scout and Algie! You startled me!” *Fans chest with paw.* “What monkey business are you up to up there?”
SCOUT: “Well, it’s funny you should mention monkey business, Paddy. We are visiting my friend!”
PADDY: “You monkey friend, Scout? Who? Chippy didn’t come for a walk with us.”
SCOUT: “This one!” *Taps smiling wooden monkey nailed to a tree trunk.* “He isn’t Chippy, but I think he might be related to Chippy the monkey who lives in the front room at home.”
PADDY: *Looks.* “Hhhmmm… he does look a little like him a little. What is his name?”
ALGIE: “We don’t know, Paddy. He doesn’t talk much.”
SCOUT: “I’m concerned about him, Paddy.”
PADDY: “Why, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Well,” *Looks at wooden monkey, then looks back at Paddy and whispers.* “He’s awfully thin, Paddy.”
ALGIE: “Thin, Scout!” *Loudly.* “He’s positively skinny!”
SCOUT: “Ssshhh Algie!” *Puts paw to mouth. Whispers.* “You might upset him.” *Looks in concern at monkey.*
ALGIE: *Quietly.* “I invited him to come home with us and have something to eat, even though we don’t know his name, but he doesn’t seem that interested.”
PADDY: *Considers* “Well he seems happy enough to me. Maybe he wants to stay here. After all this tree is his home, and he may be too shy to speak to you Scout. You were shy once too. Remember?”
ALGIE: “You were shy once, Scout?”
PADDY: “He was, and he would barely ever say anything.”
SCOUT: “But that didn’t last long.”
PADDY: “Indeed it didn’t, Scout.”
ALGIE: “Thank goodness! I can’t imagine you being quiet, Scout!”
SCOUT: “Oh, nor can I, Algie, not now!”
PADDY: “Come on you two, Daddy wants to go home and have tea and cake. Say goodbye to your monkey friend.”
ALGIE: “Goodbye little monkey. It was lovely to meet you, even if you are rather quiet.”
SCOUT: “Goodbye little friend. We’ll see you again when we next come walking this way.” *Kisses monkey and then looks down.* “Um Paddy?”
PADDY: “Yes Scout?”
SCOUT: “How do we get down, Paddy?”
ALGIE: “We are stuck, Paddy!”
PADDY: “Oh no! I’ll go and fetch Daddy!”
SCOUT and ALGIE: “Thank you Paddy!”
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Algie is made by the same friend in England who made Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson and Danny Boy. He is made of sparse English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. A very adventurous little boy, he loves to climb and sit on top of gates, edges of tables and chairs. He adore climbing trees and will cheekily sit there with crossed legs. He's very friendly and he loves adventures of any kind.
