Detail of a Theatre Coat of Satin Brocade and French Velvet
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 11th of December is “fancy fabrics”. This is a wonderful theme for me as I didn’t have to look any further than my wardrobe to find some suitably fancy fabrics. Before the pandemic, and hopefully once things settle down, I went regularly to the theatre, the opera, the ballet, the symphony, gala and charity dinners and other cultural events. This requires, what my partner mockingly calls, a theatrical wardrobe.
This is a detail shot of just one of a dozen or more theatre coats I own made from my own design. I have no time, nor aptitude, to sew my designs myself, however luckily, I have a wonderful atelier who adeptly brings my designs to fruition and works with any fabric I bring her. In this case it is a vintage lemon yellow satin brocade from the 1970s featuring a stylised Art Nouveau Japanese chrysanthemum highlighted with the most luxurious black French velvet from Lyon. The buttons, covered in contrasting fabrics, I have professionally done by two ladies who specialise in doing such work. Would you like to come and play in my wardrobe? I hope you like my choice for today’s theme, and that it makes you smile.
