Paddy Meets… Scoutpunzel!
SCOUT: “Paddy? Paddy! Paddy, can you read me a story, please?”
PADDY: “Goodness Scout! What are you wearing?”
SCOUT: “It’s a wig, Paddy.” *Preens.* “Don’t I look beautiful? I asked Daddy to make it for me out of curling ribbon, since we don’t have any blonde hair lying around the house.”
PADDY: “You look like Dolly Parton, Scout!”
SCOUT: “I don’t look like Dolly! I don’t have a red hood on!” *Shakes head and preens more.* “I have a blonde wig on my head. Dolly isn’t blonde anyway.”
PADDY: “Not your dolly, Scout. Dolly Parton!”
SCOUT: “Who, Paddy?” *Shrugs.*
PADDY: “Dolly Parton, Scout! She’s a very famous American singer and song writer.”
SCOUT: “Well… I do like to sing, Paddy, but not today. Today I’m being Rapunzel!” *Preens more.*
PADDY: “Rapunzel, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Yes Paddy! You see, Peter, you know mijn beste vriend?”
PADDY: “Yes, of course I know Peter, Scout!”
SCOUT: “Well, Peter had a dream where he and I were rescuing Rapunzel, and I had a dream that I was Rapunzel. So, I have decided to play dress-ups with mijn beste vriend Peter today! I am going to be Rapunzel… well, Scoutpunzel, actually.”
PADDY: “And is Rapunzel the story you would like me to read, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Yes please, Paddy! Only if you don’t mind, of course.”
PADDY: “Well, I was reading Beauty and the Beast and…”
SCOUT: “Oh goody! No one wants to hear again about the poor Beast who gets changed back into a crummy handsome prince when he was perfectly beautiful as the Beast, Paddy! Let’s read Rapunzel instead. Look I have the book here.” *Puts books of Rapunzel on the table.*
PADDY: *Sighs.* “Very well Scout. I’ll read Rapunzel for you and Peter, and mijn beste vriend Oleg too if he wishes to listen. Then I will finish reading Beauty and the Beast afterwards.”
SCOUT: “Very good, Paddy!”
PADDY: “Are you sitting comfortably, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Yes, Paddy.” *Excited.*
PADDY: “Then I will begin. Rapunzel. Once upon a time there liv….”
SCOUT: “Paddy?”
PADDY: “Yes Scout?”
SCOUT: “Could you please replace Rapunzel’s name with another name.”
PADDY: “Well I can, Scout, but why? Rapunzel is Rapunzel’s name.”
SCOUT: “Well, just for today, can you call her, Scoutpunzel, please?”
My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558... and their Mummy (Marian Kloon (on and off)). Peter and Scout are very similar and have become best friends. Oleg and Paddy are also very similar and have done the same. Peter and Oleg have been travelling through Germany with Mummy Marian and have been in Bremerhaven where they saw a tall lighthouse tower. Peter and Scout are convinced that Rapunzel lives in the tower. Paddy and Oleg are not so convinced. You can see Peter and Oleg before the lighthouse, or Rapunzel's tower depending upon who you believe by clicking on this link: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/51377164210/in/datepos..., or looking at the first comment below.
The cup, saucer, teapot and milk jug come from a beautiful nursery tea set is made by the Shell China company in the 1920s. It features six cups, saucers and plates (not all the set is being used today) as well as a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl, gravy boat, serving dishes and lidded tureens all gilt and featuring different nursery rhymes including: "The Queen of Hearts", "Ride a Cock-Horse to Banbury Cross", "Goosey-Goosey Gander", "Sing a Song of Sixpence", "Jack and Jill", "There was a Little Man who had a Little Gun" and "To Market to Market to Buy a Fat Pig". The set was a gift to me from a close friend.
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
