Magnolia Blooms - Thornbury

Melbourne has been blessed with some beautiful, sunny days this winter, which has made going for a suburban stroll a delight.

The other day I noticed the magnolias are starting to explode into a profusion of pink and purple fragrant blooms. This particular magnolia is a Saucer Magnolia or Chinese Magnolia.

Looking around me, I did wonder if we won't get an early spring this year, however the weather today was very cold with a dusting of snow in some areas.

Magnolia is a large genus of over two hundred flowering plant species. It is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol (1638 - 1715). Magnolia is an ancient genus. Appearing before bees did, the flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles.
