Paddington, Scout and the Cookbook 2.
PADDY: “See here Scout, this is a cookbook. Daddy has lots of these and they are full of yummy sweet and savory recipes to make if he doesn’t feel like pulling one out of his memory or making one up.”
SCOUT: “A book of yummy food Paddy! I’ll happily read this book!” *Rubs yummy vigorously.* “Grumbly tummy Paddy! Grumbly tummy!”
COUSIN PADDINGTON: “It looks like Daddy is making a baked raspberry cheesecake slice.”
SCOUT: “Grumbly tummy Cousin Paddington! Grumbly tummy!” *Rubs yummy vigorously.*
*PADDY, SCOUT and COUSIN PADDINGTON read the recipe in the cookbook.*
SCOUT: *Gasps and puts paw to mouth.* “Crush the biscuits… beat the cream cheese… whip the cream…” *Looks aghast!* “This is the most violent book I have ever read!”
PADDY: “Oh, it’s alright Scout. What…”
DADDY: “Hullo Paddy, Scout and Cousin Paddington!” *Smiles happily at bears.* “I thought my baking might bring you to the kitchen. Do you have an attack of the grumbly tummies?”
SCOUT: *Turns and looks at Daddy crossly.* “Shame on you Daddy!” *Wags paw admonishingly at Daddy.*
DADDY: “Scout! What on earth do you mean?”
SCOUT: “Beating eggs and whipping cream is what I mean!” *Disgusted.* “To say nothing of crushing biscuits! I have a good mind to report you to the RSPCF!”
PADDY, COUSIN PADDINGTON and DADDY: “The RSPCF, Scout?”
SCOUT: “The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Food!”
PADDY, COUSIN PADDINGTON and DADDY: “Oh.”
DADDY: “But Scout, that’s what you do to make food. You sometimes beat eggs, whip cream and crush biscuits.”
SCOUT: “But that’s cruel, Daddy!”
PADDY: “As I was about to say, Scout. It’s alright. That’s what these foods are for. They don’t mind. In fact they like being made into yummy food.”
SCOUT: “They do Paddy? Even when they are whipped, or beaten, or crushed?”
PADDY: “They do Scout. Even when they are whipped, or beaten, or crushed.”
SCOUT: “Oh.”
COUSIN PDDINGTON: “And sometimes, when you beat eggs and cream cheese, crush biscuits into crumbs and whip cream, you get…”
DADDY: “Baked raspberry cheesecake slice.” *Pulls a plate of baked raspberry cheesecake slice from behind his back and puts it in front to Paddy, Scout and Cousin Paddington.*
PADDY, SCOUT and COUSIN PADDINGTON: “Oooohhh.”
SCOUT: “Grumbly tummy Daddy! Grumbly tummy!” *Rubs yummy vigorously.*
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Cousin Paddington is a recent visitor to our family. Travelling all the way from London, he was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, so it looks like he is stopping with us for a while. The more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.
