Dresden Steam Festival-33.jpg

In the packed schedule, we had an afternoon trip up the main line to Bad Schandau in Swiss Saxony. A river crossing took us to the town and a walk up to the Kirnitzschtalbahn. Unlike the steam narrow gauge lines which were commercial railways primarily for goods until the late 1970s, this electric tramway was built for pleasure to allow the good people of Dresden to have a day out in the countryside. Opening in 1898 the metre gauge line has carried people to the Lichtenhain Waterfall ever since. Here a tram starts its journey from the waterfall terminus back to Bad Schandau.
