It was a long, cold winter in this part of Germany; only a week earlier, everything here had been covered by a thick layer of snow. Understandably, garden gnome Detlef was full of the joys of spring when he saw the first snowdrops of the season.
"My motto? Make bacon while the sun shines!", chuckled Detlef yesterday in a mischievous mix of metaphors to a local reporter. However, neighbours hinted that Detlef was not averse to making bacon even when the sun wasn't shining: "Hammer and tongs. Morning, noon and night."
In the interests of fairness it should be pointed out that Detlef is from Zwingenberg, just south of Darmstadt in southwest Germany. This is a very "rural" community, where this sort of behaviour is seldom questioned - let alone frowned upon.
Priscilla was unavailable for comment last night.
