The White Lion Hotel

The White Lion at Upton-upon-Severn in Worcestershire was an Inn before becoming a hostelry in 1510.

Royalist officers under the command of Prince Rupert housed themselves in the inn and naturally partook to drinking its beer and spirits which left them in a deep sleep as the Roundhead soldiers crossed the bridge to capture the church and to hold out until reinforcements arrived. The Royalists retreated to Worcester where the King was defeated by Cromwell, virtually ending the Civil War.

The novel ‘Tom Jones’ by Henry Fielding - written in 1449, is a raunchy, riotous story. – In one of Tom’s adventures, he writes about Upton-upon-Severn and describes the scenes which were carried out within two of the rooms of the White Lion.
