USS Boxer stopped off in Darwin in August 1997 when homeward bound after a six month deployment. Boxer is a Wasp Class amphibious assault ship of 40,722 tons and carries a Navy crew of 1,100 and a Marine contingent of 1,900 personnel. Pre 911 the ship was open to visitors and very little was closed to the public. This US Marines Sikorsky CH53 Sea Stallion was one of the heavy lift helicopters on board.
