USS Boxer stopped off in Darwin in August 1997 when homeward bound after a six month deployment. Boxer is a Wasp Class amphibious assault ship of 40,722 tons and carries a Navy crew of 1,100 and a Marine contingent of 1,900 personnel. Pre 911 the ship was open to visitors and very little was closed to the public. A pair of US Marines Sikorsky CH53 Sea Stallions are parked beside the crash crane.
