Flower in the Attic & Between Two Worlds
After watching Guillermo Del Toro's movie Crimson Peak, I was enthralled by the dark beauty of this Gothic Romance … I fell in love with the dilapidated old house, its beautiful ornate elements and its devastating degeneration. I wanted to capture the essence of its once opulent beginnings and romance, and then its slow demise into sadness, ruin and darkness.
On the cover of Book 1 (lower tier), the once rich gold and copper moulding is now covered in a dark shade of burnt umber. Even then, the paint is sadly peeling off, giving us a peek into the more vibrant colors which once exist beneath these dark walls. The use of the map of America symbolizes the New World as oppose to Old World Europe. Not only does it represent a voyage into the New World, it also implies a sense of freedom and the courage to seek new and exciting adventures. The choice now lies 'Between Two Worlds'.
Book 2 (upper tier) uses the same peeling paint effect to symbolize the disease and ruin of the house, and the once opulent moulding is now fading away like a dying flower. 'Flower in the Attic' signifies the people of this derelict mansion. In the looking glass feature, lies half a clock covered with a piece of burned love letter. Time is running out, love is lost. Like the house, the people and the memories are fading into the shadows. Yet in such bleak surroundings, I can still find romance in all of this. Can you?
