Mancos Shale near Palisade, Colorado. This marine shale was deposited in a shallow seaway that extended from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada, "the Western Interior Seaway", in the Cretaceous. These shales are capped by marine sandstones in lower part of the Williams Fork Formation, Mesaverde Group at the top of the section.
