Niagara Tunnel's Big Becky

After four years of underground burrowing, Big Becky has surfaced near Niagara Falls. Big Becky is the nickname of the tunnel-boring machine that dug the 10.2-kilometre-long (6.5 miles), 12.7-metre diameter, 14.4-metre-high Niagara Tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls that will bring more water to the Sir Adam Beck hydroelectric generators.

Although Big Becky's work is completed, the first drop of water isn't expected to run through the tunnel until December 2013. With the excavation done, workers will be lining the tunnel with concrete, which will make it like a 10-kilometre smooth-bored pipe. The dismantling of Big Becky will take over 6 months.

The original plan was to tour the inside of the tunnel, but with final concrete work now underway, we weren't allowed inside...crap!
