Requiem in pace, Vencil Mares+
World War II veteran Vencil Mares was probably the oldest living pitmaster in Texas. He served as a medic on D-Day, and operated the Taylor Cafe for seventy-one years (starting in 1948). Mares passed away on November 24.
That's the Texas Eagle rolling into Taylor to pick up passengers in the background.
