Lone Star Back Roads
Still Serving the South
These Southern boxcars, which are part of a Norfolk Southern mixed freight heading towards Stevenson, AL out of Chattanooga, are still serving the south ...
The bridge (the Running Water Creek Bridge), built by the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad (later Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis) is owned by CSX these days. The track entered the CSX family via the Seaboard System, which absorbed the Louisville & Nashville, which in turn had gained a controlling interest in the NC&StL in 1880.
Construction on the rail line from Chattanooga to Nashville started in 1849; in the summer 1863, the original bridge was destroyed by the retreating Confederate Army. Through determined efforts, the Federal Army was able to rebuild the bridge in less than 40 days.
There is a small sign on the other side of the bridge; you can see the text of the sign (and some historical photos) in this PDF: chickamaugacampaign.org/pdfs/RuningWater.pdf
Besides the creek, the bridge also crosses over I-24 (pictured) and TN Highway 134 (behind me; runs parallel to I-24).
The original picture wasn't all that hot so I tweaked it to bring out the overcast sky.
