Server Room in Root Cellar
The heart of our Media Center installation:
Twin PCs act as servers for our home: a Velocity Micro Grand Theater PC with two OCUR cards and two STSC tuners acts as a media center server for four media center extenders (Xbox 360s) scattered througout the house; a Dell 430SC rus Windows Small Business Server 2003 for the benefit of the 6 other PCs in the house.
Thye Media Center Server PC has a terrabyte of storage for recorded TV
A Drobo with a terrabyte of storage is connected to the Dell SBS server, which is used to store music, photos home movies, certain other video media and all our other household files. Key files are backed up nightly to an attached USB drive. Archival backup for offsite storage is done using a USB drive that has removable IDE sleds (a use for old IDE hard drives!). The Dell SBS server runs J River's Media Center, Orb and TwonkyVision as media servers and HomeSeer to control the X-10 switches outlets and thermostats in our house.
The SBS Server allows the five additional PCs in the house to have the benefit of server stored user files, WSUS controlled updates, email via and Exchange Server, a common logon on all the home PCs, and remote access via Remote Desktop and Remote Web Workplace.
Servers are connected to 17 ethernet ports throughout the house via a DLink Gigabit switch (not shown, but mounted on the wall on the right.
