The Ephemera Album
Ephemera Lost article 10 of 11
Denis Gifford (1927 - 2000) was a comic scriptwriter and friend of British comedian Bob Monk house. He was also a prolific collector and expert on comics (as well as wider ephemera), and a published author on the subject. Prolific collector? - there were piles on the treads of the stairs and even in the kitchen oven. A story I was told, that I cannot verify thru a search on the internet, is that in the last weeks of his life a visiting doctor deemed that the sheer volume of comics in the house were a health & safety issue and ordered a skip. Before they were skipped Bob arrived on a visit to his ailing friend and realised the enormity of what was happening. He saved a unique collection that included many extremely rare items as well as 1st issues. Unfortunately the collection was not preserved in its own museum as some had hoped, but broken up and auctioned.
