This statue of Ervin Magic Johnson is located outside the Breslin Center on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mi.
Johnson spent 13 years in the NBA where he won 5 NBA Championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. He still holds the record for most assist per game during a career at just over 11. He was selected as 1 of the top 50 players of all time in 1999 and was selected to the NBA Hall of Fame in 2002. His number 32 is retired by the Los Angeles Lakers, but before this big career in the NBA, Johnson was just as big a star in college.
Johnson, being from Lansing, Mi, choose Michigan State over the University of Michigan, Indiana, and UCLA. His first year as a Michigan State Spartan, Johnson led the team in scoring and to a Big 10 championship victory, a 25-5 record, and a finish in the Elite 8 where the Spartans lost to Kentucky who would win the National Championship. Johnsons sophomore year was even better. Johnson led the team in scoring again and put Michigan State at the top of college basketball by the end of the year. The Spartans would defeat Indiana State, and former NBA Hall of Famer Larry Bird, in the NCAA Championship bringing home Michigan State's first national championship. Johnson was name Final Four MVP and was named an All American. Johnson left after 2 years for the NBA where he would be selected #1 overall by the Los Angeles Lakers.
