Tbilisi, Kukia Cemetery building

Between June to December 1918, the Bavarian Reserve-Jäger-Bataillon 1 had lost 27 men. Unfortunately, I did not find any numbers of fallen soldiers of the other German units in Georgia. I estimate that in total some 60-70 had died during that period, mostly due to diseases.

In and around Tbilisi, probably some 40 Germans had died who were buried in a cemetery on a hill east of town, I assume Kukia cemetery.

I had spend several hours searchig for their tombs on the huge area, even with the help of a young student. Noone knew that Germans were in Georgia in 1918 and even less about any tombs of Germans in the cemetery.

Most likely, the tombs were cared by the German community but after they were transported to Kazakhstan in 1941 on Stalin's order, it was common that German tombs were destroyed. Today, it seems all tombs of those Germans who had helped Georgia have faded as the memory of these men.
