GOLD Hill or HOVIS Hill - " Last stop on t' round were like taking bread to the top of the world."
.
Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset appears in the 1967 film version of Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd.
The street is also the main setting for the 1973 "Boy on Bike" television advertisement for Hovis bread, which has been voted Britain's favourite advertisement of all time. It was directed by Ridley Scott, and includes the distinctive main theme of Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9. For this reason, the hill is still known to many people as "Hovis Hill".
The boy pushed his bike with a fully laden front basket of bread all the way up this hill for his final delivery of the day, and " 't was like takin' bread to the top of the world " then back down, riding with legs akimbo while the voice over said " 't was a grande ride back though "
The ancient cobbled street runs beside the Grade I listed walls of the ancient Shaftesbury Abbey ( right ) built by King Alfred the Great. The origins of the wall are not known, but it is presumed to have been built in the 1360s, when the abbess or other authority was given royal permission to build town defences.
The word Hovis was coined from the Latin phrase hominis vis – "the strength of man". The company became the Hovis Bread Flour Company Limited in 1898.( originally from Macclesfield, Cheshire 1886)
When the abundance of certain B vitamins in wheatgerm was reported in 1924, Hovis increased in popularity.
As they say " As good today as it's always been "
The youtube posts of the 70's advertisement on this hill ( Boy on Bike - Hovis ) are unfortunately not very good quality (www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mq59ykPnAE ) but there is an 80's t.v. advertisement which became immediately popular.... encompassing at the time, 122 years of English/British history, and bread production and sales. ( not showing the hill )

Photo taken from very near the top of the hill where there is also a restaurant with this wonderful view...
Fully enjoyed with family on this particular afternoon.
