PLAYLAND Pool, York, PA. - Deep End Diving Boards - I eventually did work up to the high dives......
PLAYLAND was a wonderful and unique recreational complex east of York, Pennsylvania. It was along the Lincoln Highway and included a large swimming pool and grounds, a roller rink, and a miniature golf course in front of the pool.
The pool was unique in that it was built out of (not IN) the ground (somewhat similar to Marineland in Florida as seen in Revenge of the Creature).
You can see the people in the distance sitting on the edge of the structure which contained the pool. There were grounds around the elevated pool for picnicing and sun bathing.
PLAYLAND was one of the most wonderful experiences I had while growing up in Harrisburg.
At the entrance, which was under this diving area/deep end, there were two windows, one each for the men and women's changing areas, through which you could view people diving into and swimming in the pool.
This was a truly amazing experience in the 1950s. I always hoped I would somehow see the Creature from the Black Lagoon among the Pennsylvania swimmers. PLAYLAND was the closest we had to Marineland in Pennsylvania.
There were large colorful paintings of sea creatures on the bottom of the pool. I wish I had some photographs of them.
Please note: PLAYLAND photos COPYRIGHT Ross Care. From original Kodachrome color transparencies.
