Rosa 'Constance Spry'

David Austin, World Famous (UK) Rose Breeder - đŸŒ¹released 1961.

The hybrid parentage is the Gallica rose, Rosa ‘Belle Isis’, and the floribunda, Rosa ‘Dainty Maid’.

The first rose cultivar commercially developed by British rose breeder, the late David C.H. Austin. 'Constance Spry' was introduced at a time when the shrub rose was out of style, the hybrid tea rose being the most popular rose with gardeners. The new cultivar renewed the popularity of the more old fashioned type of rose.

The glorious pervasive fragrance has always been described as 'myrrh-like', but arguably this is closely associated with the lovely Sweet Cicely (Myrrhis odorata), rather than the sought-after resin Myrrh of the Biblical 3 Kings.

Constance Spry (1886-1960) was one of the most fashionable and revolutionary florists of the 20th century, as well as a successful author and educator. Breaking with the traditional yet dated flower displays of the day, Spry amalgamated a horticulturist's knowledge of plants with an artist's flair for decoration.
