Iguana Hunt - Belize - 2000
Something you maybe didn't know about me... I went on an Iguana hunt and caught one... with the help of my friend, a local guide in the year 2000!
It was a final field trip that was part of a Tropical Marine Biology class that i was taking as a math/science elective as part of my (no kidding) Accounting Degree!
We studied the marine biology of the these tropical waters during the winter in a classroom. And the grand finale was a 12-day trip to Belize! We spent six days on a South Water Keye, an atoll 10 miles off the southern coast of Belize. Then six days in the rain forest at Blue Creek.
While there, we studied the plants, birds, insects and animals of the rain forest. More hummingbirds than I've ever seen! We only have one species here in New Hampshire. But the most fascinating animal i met was this iguana! We learned about where they live... one particular giant tree near a creek, deep in the jungle. We hiked there with a guide who was carrying a large machete to cut away the vines that grew up the day before!
And we learned about where the iguanas hide... under the flat rocks in the creek. The only problem, they don't realize their very long tails are sticking out! Not a very hard critter to catch... haha! My guide let me hold him for this photo shoot and then we put him right back into the creek. An experience of a lifetime!
