The largest hoverfly found in the UK. It is about the size of a hornet and looks similar at first glance. It feeds on Nectar and is harmless of course. It is a Mediterranean species which travels north each year and is now quite common in the South of England. It was first seen in the UK in the 1940s and numbers have increased every year since.
