Picture Diary of Nov. 28, 2011 Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

by meg williams2009

We left the hotel early to get to the bird sanctuary before the midday heat. It was always very hard to estimate traveling time from any information we got. The actual distance can be deceiving because of the conditions of roads. All the roads we traveled varied from smooth 2-lane highway to almost one-lane pavement with gravel curbs with many pot holes. All our drivers told us they knew the destination that we told, but kept asking directions constantly on the way. Here in this country males ask directions!!

The bird sanctuary was a bit of disappointment for us. We had visited Keolado Bird Sancturary in our previous trip. That was much larger than Vedanthangal and we could move around much more. This one had a narrow path built around the shore of the marsh land for visitors and the path was very short.

We stayed at an observatory tower for a long time and listened to the cacophony of many large birds made. There was an Indian couple almost meditating with birds’ calls as background music. Listening to the sound was a big relief from constant honking of the Indian traffic. We left the sanctuary after a much shorter stay than we planned.

We also saw a Scimitar Babbler and Common Kingfishers along with ones in pictures.
