Former Milwaukee Road Division Street Yard-Goose Island Chicago-1989

This view looks southwest across the remains of the Milwaukee Road Division Street Yard on Goose Island. The location today would be 1400 North Cherry Avenue. Goose Island north of Division Street was still mostly dirt roads prior to a new street grid being imposed on it, tracks rationalized, and streets rebuilt in the early 2000s.

In 1989 MILW successor Soo Line still used part of the Division Street Yard for storing cars and for when crews were working other industries on the island. Goose Island customers in 1989 getting rail service regularly were International Salt, Midwest Industrial Metals, Big Bay Lumber, National By-Products, and the team tracks at Hooker and Division.

It was ten years ago this month that the last revenue train operated onto Goose Island with Chicago Terminal going down to Big Bay Lumber.
