The Belvidere-based job just came east from the yard and is slowing down alongside customer Central Grain in the background with the parked hoppers. The conductor will throw the switch so the train can use the wye and back all the way down to the Chrysler plant to exchange autorack cars. It will leave with new Jeep Cherokee SUVs which a transfer run headed up by a CSX engine will take back to West Chicago at night.
Yesterday was the last day of operations at the Chrysler plant in Belvidere after parent company Stellantis announced it was idling the plant "indefinitely."
Some 1200 jobs were eliminated as a result. It is a major blow to the Rockford area economy.
