Chicago & North Western Railroad Abandoned Navy Pier Line Illinois Street @ North Pier Terminal Chicago April 1987
It was a transition time for this area of Chicago as industries that were served by the C&NW had mostly shut down or relocated while the massive redevelopment into residential space had not yet started. It was a place where I could find cheap parking when calling on downtown customers.
This view looks east along Illinois Street. The former Kraft factory is on the left and the North Pier Terminal building on the right. The North Pier Terminal was redeveloped into a popular retail and restaurant attraction, opening in 1990. It faded by the late 1990s as most of the stores closed and just Dick's Last Resort restaurant was left on the far west end. It is now lofts.
This photo was taken with a Kodak Hawkeye Instamatic camera using 126 cartridge based film.
