The stem piece is the declaration of your community. A single piece of cedar is split 16 times to allow it without cracking to take on the shape above. Each end is identical. The voyageurs, the eastern woodland indians, the great lakes Anishinaabe, and the northern dwelling Algonquins all had distinctively different stem piece designs.
