Judges of Israel
The Book of Judges covers an almost 300 year period after the death of Joshua to the time of Samuel, who is not usually counted amongst the Judges. Each Judge was selected by YHWH from various tribes and for a variety of purposes - sometimes only one event is recorded. Some question whether Deborah should be counted amongst the Judges of Israel and instead replace her with her contemporary Barak as Judge.
Exactly where each Judge primarily worked and their dates of judgeship cannot always be determined. It is always possible for some Judges to have worked at the same time in different parts of Israel.
The time of the Judges seems to have been a period where the diverse tribes sometimes worked independently and in competition with each other. At other times various tribes might work together against another tribe or an external enemy. It seems that, whilst each tribe may have seen themselves as part of the Israel of YHWH God, there was no clear understanding of being one nation - having lost the clear leadership of Moses & Joshua. It was not until the time of Samuel that any real understanding of being one nation under YHWH God began to develop. David and Solomon cemented this understanding by establishing Jerusalem as the nations capital and centre of worship. With the death of Samuel, and later the death of Solomon, this concept of nationhood again took a backseat in the face of tribal priorities and jealousies.
Our picture seeks to show either the area of each Judge’s main activity or their place of origin.
