Capernaum From Air

The Capernaum seen by visitors is not much bigger than a large family garden. For anyone with a trained eye most aerial views of the surrounding fields show that Capernaum extends far beyond that which has so far been excavated. The inset view has just a very few of the "shadows" of ancient buildings marked with arrows.

Capernaum was well situated on the main highway between Mesopotamia (& the regions beyond) and Egypt (&Africa). It is no wonder that the Romans stationed a Century (80) of soldier's here, presumably to protect the tax & customs control found here. Where were they garrisoned?

The salted fish from Galilee was famous over a very wide area, even on the Emperor's table! These supposedly "simple fishermen" ran businesses which exported their products far & wide. They probably were familiar, if not speaking fluently, at least four languages - Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek & Latin. They needed to be able to understand at least these four languages to run their businesses. The Southern Jerusalemites typically considered them as dumb Northerners, that probably does not reflect the reality!
