Ode to Rachel Fields - Sparrow front

My New Year's Resolution is to make every quilt in the book "Simple Contemporary Quilts - Bold New Designs for the First-Time Quilter" by Valerie Van Arsdale Shrader. This book has a collection of 20 quilts from different designers.

I am going to make them small sized so that I can actually complete them and I am going to use my stash fabrics. The intent is to increase production, try new techniques and gain proficiency.

I have a lot to learn and this gives me some focus and goals to concentrate on.

This is my first attempt and its a fairly literal copy of Rachel Field's Sparrow but for some reason I had to have the bird and sun reversed - going to the left and my bird is is more flowing.

I used velvet and silk and organza and tried out my decorative stitches on my machine. This was not supposed to be bound - but I need binding practice so put one one - and I need more practice.

This looks pretty good in person but I think I will fix the binding so the red stops at the gold. The piece is about 9 by 10 inches.
