Trio 876

(Marcello Magliocchi - percussion; Matthias Boss - violin; Jean-Michel van Schouwburg - voice)

Marcello Magliocchi is a pioneer in avant garde jazz in South Italy since the 1970s. He has toured with Steve Lacy, William Parker, and many of the Italian jazz scene (including Enrico Rava, Roberto Ottaviano and Enrico Pieranunzi). He designs his own instruments and builds sounds installations using percussion.

Matthias Boss is a wizard violinist on a par with improv maestros like Jon Rose and Zingaro. His sound, technique and melodic sense are all of the highest level - a stalwart of the great Swiss improvising scene for decades now.

Jean-Michel van Schouwburg is a rarity: a male improvising singer exploring the possibilities and extremities of the human voice. He has performed and recorded with John Russell, Lawrence Casserley, Paul Dunmall and Sabu Toyozumi, and also acted in the award winning movie Berberian Sound Studio.

A note from the curators: this gig marks a welcome return to Liverpool for vocalist Jean-Michel, following on from his highly successful workshop at Bluecoat Arts Centre in October 2014, and we very much look forward to future visits and collaborations!

The Huddersfield Trio

(Mark Hanslip - tenor saxophone; Phil Morton - accidents & treatments; Phillip Marks - drums/percussion)

Mark Hanslip first came to recognition as a sideman on the UK jazz scene in the mid-2000s, during which he gradually gravitated towards purely improvised music. He currently plays with Twelves, drummer Tony Bianco’s Utoma Quartet, and more locally with an array of improvising musicians and dancers.

Phillip Marks is best known for co-leading the trio Bark! whose CDs for Evan Parker’s psi label have attracted significant acclaim. He also plays regularly in pianist Stephen Grew’s quartet and in duo with reedist Mick Beck.

Phil Morton has 30 years experience in the nature and practice of free improvisation. Pauline Oliveros, Maggie Nicols,Phil Minton, Steve Beresford, Simon H. Fell, Carlos Zingaro are a few important artists he has worked with or learned from. He co-founded the Frakture organisation, is a well-known acoustic ecologist leading ‘sound-walks’ around the city, has made presentations at conferences and as a musician has worked nationally and internationally.
