Red Crossbill [female] - Loxia curvirostra
Red Crossbill (female) in January at Nanaimo River Estuary in Nanaimo, BC. These guys usually showup during our winters in fairly good numbers. The male is red or reddish while the females are yellow-greenish as is the one in this picture. They were feeding among the the weathered grasses on the rain-soaked marsh. This one was with a flock of 40 birds.
