CANADIAN COAST GUARD at St Johns, Newfoundland
The Sir Wilfred Grenfell was built in 1987 by Marystown Shipyard Ltd., in Marystown, Newfoundland. She was originally laid down as an offshore supply vessel but was subsequently purchased by the Canadian Government and converted for Coast Guard service.
This coast card boat is named after a most honourable Canadian, Sir Wilfred Grenfell. In 1893 he set up a hospital at Indian Harbour, Newfoundland and later opened 'cottage' hospitals along the coast of Labrador. He was knighted in 1927 (which was recognition of medical, educational and social work)and he also received the title of Honorary Knight for Life, Loyal Knights of the Round Table in 1928 (for great service to humanity). In 1940 their was a Canadian stamp issued in his commemoration and he was entered in the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 1997.
