As the 81st and 47th took part in most of the early major campaigns including the Peninsular Wars, The Burmese War, The Crimea and The Second Afghan War.

ln the 14/18 War they served in all the major front lines including Gallipoli. Losses in the Great War amounted to 7,590.

ln the Second World War they were at Dunkirk, North Africa, ltaly, Malaya, and North West Europe.

ln 2006 the regiment became part of the Duke of Lancaster Regiment.

When they were the 47th they wore a black line on their lace at the sorrow of the death of James Wolfe where they were commonly known as Wolfe's Own. They were the only regiment known in the British Army with the word loyal as a title and originated about the time of the 45 Rebellion.
