szablewski - Honda door lock

The 94 Honda Accord driverside door lock is equippped with a mechanism that is made to prevent the user from locking his/her keys in the car. The device prevents the driver's door from locking when the lock button is pressed. The user then closes the door and is only able to lock the vehicle with the key from the outside. If the user wishes, he/she can override this mechanism by pulling the door latch and then pressing the lock button. This allows both doors to lock.

This device was made with good intentions, but is a poor design because it is unrealistic. Users with power locks want to be able to use them, and especially don't want to use the key. This results in most users using the override feature which adds difficulty to locking the doors. It also requires special instuction of other users of the vehicle other than the owner who may not know about the device. This has resulted in occurences where the door has been left unlocked.
