My best friend
There Will Always Be…
A field to conquer. Full of tall grass and heavy trees. Pestered by squirls that need to be chased. Divided by a cool stream that needs to be crossed, offering a refreshing drink as you wade through.
A mailman to bark at, forever delivering the endless clutter that invades your domain. One, maybe two good barks to send him on his way.
A walk to be taken, through the familiar neighborhood that surrounds our house. Stopping every few feet to investigate who has been here recently.
A corner to lay in. Comfortable and familiar. Reasuring.
My firm hand to run across your head. Scratch your chine, jostle your ears. Rub your belly till your leg twiches in enjoyment. Chew on in one of our endless matches. Wrestling the big “goanna”. The tail forever wagging in pure enjoyment.
The wooden floors to thump your tail against. To let us know you are there, keeping vigil through the night. To greet us in the morning when we get up, after a long day at work, and to send us on our way at night. There will be no greater memory than that sound alone.
The beach where you were always the happiest. The never ending surf that offered relief from the Texas heat. The cool sand under my truck, the wind off the dunes, carrying the smells that only you could catch.
Activity in the kitchen, needing to be watched for the tidbit that falls off the counter. The reward of being the ever present company while I cook.
A place at my feet. Now lonely and empty. A void in my chest, remebering the joy that you brought us. Longing for the love and endearment that you gave so freely, without want, hoping for the same in return.
I miss you my friend. I miss you Bandit.
