Arrows A22 Aisatech Silverstone GP 2001.
In 2001 i was lucky enough to be invited to watch practise and quailifying for the british GP.
We were based at the British racing drivers club for the day, which was an excellent view point to take photos due to the lack of fences.
As a GP fan for most of my adult life this was a chance of a life time, being able to view the cars close up and rub shoulders with motorsport personalitys.
This view shows an TWR Arrows A22 powered by the Asiatech 3.0 litre V10 entering the pit lane.
This was unfortunatley theArrows teams penultimate season in F1,the team collasped during 2002 due to financial problems.
The car aqua planes into the pits piloted by Dutch driver Jos Vestappen.
The 2001 season was a poor season for arrows, there only points were gathered by Jos with a 6th place at the Austrian GP.The Asiatech engine, basically the former Peugeot engine rebadged, lacked power and the A22 chassis was only an update of the car raced in 2000.
The prevous years car the A21 was powered by the more powerful Supertech engine (formelly Renault) and had a much better aerodynamic package enabling it to be often the fasted car in a straight line, acheiving much better results.
Tom Walkinshaw of TWR had acheived great thing in various other levels of motor sport including touring cars and sports cars,he aquired the venerable Arrows team in 1996 from former racer Jack Oliver and pulled of a real coup for the 1997 season signing world champion Damon Hill and wealthy pay driver Pedro Diniz to help pay Damon's wages.
A near win aside in 1997 at the Hungarian GP,they came home 2nd due to a tramission fault during the last few laps allowing Jaques Villenueve to pass Damons car and take the win, little else was really acheived by Arrows under TWR ownership.
Jos brought the car home in 10th place during this GP.
