The Battle of Avaí, completed in 1877, in Florence, Italy, this gigantic work by Pedro Américo, wich portrays a dramatic episode of the Paraguay war, comprises the largest easel painting of brasileian art history. After sucess fully exhibiting it in Florebce the Battle of Avaí was displayed at the Largo do Paço currently Praça XV de Novembro and in 1879, at the Imperial Academy Américo portrayed himself as the soldier in the foreground, with number 33 on his cap.
The National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most important art museums in Brazil. Although the museum´s cornerstone was layed January 13, 1937 - and it opened on August 19, 1938 - its history is much older and dates back to the arrival of the Royal Portuguese family to Rio de Janeiro in 1808, thanks to Don John VI who brought along his artwork collection, some of which remained in Brazil on his return to Europe and are the initial core of the collection.
