technology
While I agree with Innis that some communications technologies can have barriers to entry that may preclude it's usage by the general population, we are quick to learn and adapt to new technology and communications mediums. While some mediums can fall out of fashion, it is rare for humans to give up forms of expression that are still useful. While languages such as semaphore, morse code, and translating woodcut images may not be current, there are still individuals who maintain this knowledge. We like to hoard information, and in the information if one cannot dig up information online, they probably are not looking in the right places.
