Network Rail optical measuring vehicle
Network Rail wagon no.DC460000 - structure gauging vehicle seen at Derby RTC on 190307 being tested beneath its calibration frame. The train runs during darkness and bounces the light off the lineside structures, such as platforms, bridges and tunnels. The equipment inside the vehicle measures how far the light has travelled before travelling back to the vehicle and this builds up a profile of the structure. This is then measured against previous runs to see if there has been any movement of the structure - or the line towards the structure, so that gauge clearance can be monitored and any structures that may be showing early signs of serious defects can be detected and examined.
