I had a really awesome spring break where I was able to travel to a few places and see some great friends. While I was in Philly we went to this abandoned brewery. Up on the fourth floor there was a tree.
Outside you see a towering building, most people don't take note of it. When you take the time to squint in the sun though, you begin to see that this is a place in pretty bad shape. It's falling apart, there are holes through the place. Trash is everywhere, everything around it is dead or just a bed of dirt. It looks like it's been bombed, not structurally sound, decaying, desolate. At times we feel like this, like no one wants us, like shit, like our lives are falling apart.
Then you travel up the four floors and you realize that, even though it's winter, and there is no reason a tree should be living at the top of this building that looks like it won't stand another day, lo and behold, there's a tree. It's just chillin' doing it's tree thing, but it's there and that's a pretty remarkable thing. You might look at your life and see something not worth much, but if you change your perspective, really get inside and check out the details, you'll see there is so much there. In every bit of misery and chaos there's a world of beauty. Plus, it's a tree living FOUR stories up in an abandoned brewery. That's awesome.
