Compton Castle, Devon
Compton Castle, Devon, UK A rare survivor from a bygone age. A medieval fortified manor house with high curtain walls, towers and two portcullis gates, set in a landscape of rolling hills, secret leafy lanes and orchards. Home for nearly 600 years to the Gilbert family, including Sir Humphrey Gilbert, half-brother to Sir Walter Ralegh. The family still reside in the castle so very few rooms are open, Hall, Chapel and Solar. At the rear the old Kitchens and the guard room above are interesting. The castle is managed by the National Trust. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-index.htm
