Interesting progress!
Sorry for the grainy picture of a screen, but this is what I've got. I'm looking to slightly outline the gray rectangular shape.
On the left, the thin black lines adjacent to the gray are 2×2 hinge plates, which are 1/4 of a plate in thickness. 2 of these plus two tiles are the same thickness as a stud (2+[1/2] plates = 1 stud). I really love the NPU for detail.
On the right, I use the bottom groove of tiles, jumpers, and cheese slopes to create a subtle outline. This technique was inspired by the amazing Blake Foster.
