Shoes with Hand-Knit Insoles

Iceland, early 20th century

Codfish skin, wool

Fragile as footwear, fish skin shoes were also used to measure the walking distance between destinations, with longer trips requiring two or even three pairs of shoes. Hand-knit wool insoles helped to keep the wearer's feet warm and protected on the journey.
